¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español! (Welcome to Spanish class!) World language study can be broken down into five areas: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture. I believe that all five areas are very important. However, I feel that the speaking skill is the most useful since the goal of learning Spanish is to be able to communicate in an everyday situation with a native speaker. So, you’ll be doing a lot of speaking with classmates and me in class. If we all work together, your skills will grow and learning Spanish will be fun! Here are some of the guidelines I expect you to follow in my class:
ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITIES-
You will be graded on tests, oral/aural (listening) work, homework, projects, and preparation/participation.
¨MATERIALS: Bring all needed materials to class daily (charged Chromebook, textbook, notebook, writing tool, completed assignments/projects, positive attitude). Make sure you have everything before you come to class because I will not write locker passes for forgotten items.
¨ASSIGNMENTS: Complete assignments on time. In order to get credit for your assignments, they must be completely done BEFORE class starts. You will not receive full credit for late work unless you have a non-school-related excused absence. You will have as many days as you were absent to hand in assignments. If you are absent and need to find out what you missed, please check my Google Classroom. If you are absent when I check an assignment, it is your responsibility to have it ready to hand in or be checked at the beginning of class when you return. For packet homework, have me stamp your completed assignment before class on the day you return. *NOTE: If you miss class for anything school-related (sports, extracurriculars, field trips, etc.), you are responsible for finding out what you will miss beforehand, completing it, and handing it in early or at the beginning of class when you return.
¨TESTS/QUIZZES: I usually give at least two days' notice before tests and quizzes. I expect you to participate in our in-class review sessions. I expect you to study hard on your own for tests and quizzes and to show up for them. An unexcused absence on the day of a test or quiz results in an automatic "E" for the test or quiz. If you have an excused absence, you will need to arrange to make up tests & quizzes with me before or after school or during my plan period (with permission from your other teacher). If you do not show up for your scheduled make-up time and don't let me know in advance, you will get an automatic "E" for the test or quiz. *NOTE: Makeup tests may be different from those given in class.
¨HELP/QUESTIONS: If, at any time, you feel like you don’t understand something in class, PLEASE ask questions or come see me for help!!! It is your responsibility to get help if you need it. While I expect you to take initiative to try to find answers and information on your own, if you are having trouble, there is nothing wrong with asking for help! I AM HERE FOR YOU!!!
BEHAVIORAL RESPONSIBILITIES-
Just like learning any other skill, foreign language learning requires a little bit of practice every day. Outside of class, this practice will take the form of homework and speaking Spanish whenever possible. Expect to have homework every day. If you don’t keep up on your homework or don't take the time to do it correctly, you miss out on valuable practice and lose points.
In class, I expect you to follow the Common Classroom Expectations that are posted in all ERHS teachers’ classrooms. Here are some things you should ask yourself frequently that I use to determine your participation grade:
_____Do I have ALL needed materials/assignments (carefully done) when I come to class?
_____Do I look interested and eager (head up, eye contact, etc.)?
_____Am I prepared to answer questions in class every day?
_____Do I volunteer at least once every day (even if I’m unsure of my answer)?
_____Do I listen carefully when Sr. T. gives instructions or explanations?
_____Do I follow classroom procedures/instructions as directed?
_____Do I ask meaningful questions if I don’t understand something?
_____Do I participate enthusiastically in class activities?
_____Do I contribute and do my share of the work as a member of a cooperative group?
_____Do I help the class flow smoothly?
_____Do I complete my Spanish work before focusing on anything else in class?
_____Do I practice my Spanish every day?
_____Do I strive to do quality work every day?
How many times have I been ABSENT this semester?__________ TARDY?__________
¡BUENA SUERTE Y HABLEMOS ESPAÑOL!(GOOD LUCK AND LET’S SPEAK SPANISH!)
